If you have been watching the news lately, a lot of students are thinking about graduation, employment prospects, and….(drum roll)….student loans! No fear! There are resources and organizations out there advocating and keeping students with disabilities in the conversations on policy and social justice.
On great piece of reform on the horizon has been the hard work and collaboration of the National Consumer Law Center and the Institute for College Access and Success with the Department of Education. As a result of some serious advocacy and regular citizens speaking out, there are some major changes to assist students with disabilities and student loan debt. As early as July 2013, the Dept. of Education will be implementing a new process where students with disabilities burdened under student loan debt have increased resources. An easier application process, clearer communication, and new ways for lawyers and representatives to get involved are just some of the changes. One of the greatest aspects of this new reform, however, is the opportunity for people with long-term disabilities to be have their circumstances evaluated for consideration of student loan debt discharged and/or forgiven.
