There are a lot of websites out there that offer free stuff: free iPads, free X-Box 360s, free makeup, free free free. There are, though, if you have ever investigated any of these things, catches. "Sign up for this," "Complete this offer," "Send your life savings and all of your important information here" and so on. There are, we've seen significantly fewer websites that offer free education. When I say free education, I mean free education; classes and assignments and lessons that come from established professors across the world.
It came to our attention recently that there were, in fact, websites doing just this. In what will now be an ongoing event for our ASC staff, we've asked one of our own, Natalie, to look over and review one of these sites--in this case www.coursera.org. Below, check out some screen shots as well as Natalie's review of one of the best places to get FREE knowledge.
From Natalie:
"Coursera.org is an innovative
website that is working to make higher education more accessible to students
all over the world. How are they doing it? By offering a selection of college
courses online taught by professors from some of the top universities in the
world and all at no cost to the student. The process is simple you just go to
the site, browse through the courses, find one you like, and sign up it really
is that easy. The courses offered also cover a wide range of topics from
Medicine to Education and from Computer Science to Humanities and everything in
between.
I really love the mission of this
company in trying to make quality higher education more accessible to a larger
number of people and I believe they are really achieving that by partnering
with universities like Duke, Vanderbilt, Harvard, Stanford, Emory, and so many
others of equal prestige and notoriety. If you are interested in looking at
some classes to gain more knowledge about a particular subject or something
just looks like fun I encourage you to check the site and give it a shot. The
other really cool thing about Coursera is that upon completion of most the
classes you will receive a certificate signed by the professor saying that you
completed the class!!
Cool right?
Don’t waste any more time and head
on over to Coursera.org to catch it out and take advantage of this amazing
resource."
